The Mindful Path — A Radiant Life | Oct. 3, 2022

“With the right words, you can change the world.” Charlotte’s Web

The quintessential, farm classic “Charlotte’s Web” debuted 70 years ago, on October 15, 1952. Author E.B. White crafted this enduring tale of friendship. The book has remained in print for decades to be celebrated by teachers, grandparents, parents, and children. The gentle story lends itself to be a great read aloud book.

You may recall the cast of memorable characters including Charlotte, the amazingly talented brown spider; Wilbur, the famous pig; Fern, the good-hearted farm girl; and the barnyard animals that bring the book to life. Charlotte and Wilbur become unlikely friends. When Wilbur learns that he is destined to end up in the smoke house before winter, Charlotte vows to save him. Charlotte uses her web to communicate how special Wilbur is by first weaving in her web that he is “some pig.” Charlotte’s Web is a celebration of timeless virtues like keeping a tender heart, embracing unique friendships, accepting one’s true nature along with valuing the special gifts of others.

Autumn is in the air. It is the perfect time to reflect on the wisdom of Charlotte’s Web by exploring a few famous quotes:

Life’s purpose “You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while, we die. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone’s life can stand a little of that.” Slow down “Never hurry and never worry.” Be brave “Be not afraid and be not lonely!” Remember the admirable qualities of your friends “You’re terrific as far as I’m concerned and that’s what counts. You’re my best friend, and I think you’re sensational.” The Bookies Bookstore has partnered with Prime Time News to host the first Family Book Club on Saturday, October 15 at 10:30 a.m. The featured book is Charlotte’s Web! The celebration will include reading, crafts and fun with Charlotte and her friends. Plan to enjoy the festivities at Bookies Bookstore, 4315 E Mississippi Ave, Denver, CO 80246. If you are unable to join the Bookies event, the Literary Hostess has terrific ideas at this blog to host a wonderful Charlotte’s Web themed party: https://www.literaryhostess.com/charlotte-s-web

Charlotte’s Web demonstrates, in our own ways, we can be terrific, radiant, and humble. I hope the book reminds you this is some life and miracles are all around us. May fall bring simple joys, health, and a good book to you.
