“We can bring positive energy into our daily lives by smiling more, talking to strangers in line, replacing handshakes with hugs, and calling our friends just to tell them we love them.” - Brandon Jenner
Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM). The 2024 theme is Powered by Connection. The season of spring is the perfect time to explore the positive impact of meaningful relationships and social connections. Let’s take some time this month to explore the important role that connectedness plays in supporting independence and vitality in aging by combatting isolation and loneliness.
The Older American Month task force encourages us to promote the benefits of connecting with others. Here are some ways you can participate.
Share facts about the mental, physical, and emotional health benefits of social connection and how it contributes to overall well-being.
Promote resources that help older adults engage, like community events, social clubs, and volunteer opportunities.
Connect older adults with local services, such as transportation, that can help them overcome obstacles to achieving or maintaining meaningful relationships.
Encourage partners to host a connection-centric event or program focused on older adult mentors to youth, peer-to-peer support, or similar efforts.
Challenge professional and personal networks to prioritize meaningful social connections and share the benefits.
Encourage your faith community to take an active role in promoting projects and events that actively include older adults.
Be proactive and invite older friends to join in lunch outings and other fun activities.
Visit people in care facilities and attend community leisure activities with them.
Don’t forget, furry friends can be wonderful visitors!
